Kop van Zuid, from port to work/living area

The Kop van Zuid – located in Rotterdam on the south bank of the Nieuwe Maas –  was an abandoned port area. The site has been converted: old port buildings were transformed and have new functions as a cinema, a museum or restaurant. New high-rise flats have been admitted. One of the flats, De Rotterdam, has been designed by Rem Koolhaas, OMA, completed in 2013. De Rotterdam is designed for residency, labor and leisure. Three linked towers of nearly 150 m high are forming a ‘vertical city’ with flats, a 4-star hotel, offices, shops, restaurants, fitness and parking facilities. There was for more than an age a large physical distance between the centre and the former port. New infrastructure – a bridge designed by UN Studio and a metro – are now connecting the banks of the river the Nieuwe Maas.
