Eastern Docklands – harbour transformation

From shipwharf to residential area

The Eastern Docklands, a former harbor area in Amsterdam, consists of artificial peninsulas that were constructed between 1874 and 1927. In the seventies the port activities were relocated to the western dock area of the city. At the same time the Amsterdam City Council decided to develop this area. Between 1987 and 2003 old buildings were transformed into housing and work spaces. Some 8,000 new dwellings, shops and offices have been adjusted. The result is a very popular area where people love to live, relax and swim.
